Micro Villages Program

Currently we are in Phase I of our Micro Villages program!

The Micro Villages Program by A Sister's Village Inc is designed to address the critical and pressing needs of underserved mothers and their children, particularly in communities where poverty, unstable housing, and lack of access to nutritious food create significant barriers to family well-being. These challenges are often compounded by social isolation, leaving many mothers without the support networks necessary to navigate the complexities of raising children in difficult circumstances.

In many areas, low-income families, especially single mothers, face the harsh reality of inadequate housing options. Overcrowded, unsafe, or unstable living conditions can severely impact a child's development and a mother's ability to provide for her family. Alongside this, the lack of access to affordable, healthy food leads to poor nutrition, which has long-term detrimental effects on both physical and cognitive development in children.

The Micro Villages Program is a direct response to these challenges, targeting mothers who are struggling to meet their families' basic needs. By forming small, supportive groups of three mothers, the program creates a micro-community where participants can rely on each other for emotional and practical support. This structure not only alleviates feelings of isolation but also encourages collective problem-solving, resource sharing, and mutual aid.

The program's dual focus on safe housing and nutrition education is essential to addressing the root causes of instability in these families' lives. Safe housing is a fundamental requirement for any family's security and well-being, and A Sister's Village Inc works to ensure that all participants have access to environments where they can thrive. Concurrently, the program's emphasis on nutrition education empowers mothers with the knowledge and tools they need to provide their children with healthy, balanced diets, which is crucial for their overall development.

Through the Micro Villages Program, A Sister's Village Inc not only addresses the immediate needs of these families but also builds long-term resilience, helping mothers to create and maintain nurturing environments where their children can grow and succeed. By focusing on the interconnected issues of housing, nutrition, and community support, the program aims to break the cycle of poverty and create lasting positive change for the most vulnerable members of society.

Our Phases

Phase one: Micro grants to mothers who need housing stability funds. These moms will apply and be selected on a monthly basis. Participants will be invited to monthly free mixers to help form community with others.

Phase two: A Sister’s Village will begin renting homes to provide participants a stable and low cost safe place to live. Participants are required to be in school or working toward gainful employment while also coordinating schedules to fulfill their contracted duties to the household. Each household unit will be of 3 moms either pregnant or with young children the same age. Participants will be required to attend monthly trainings and help with childcare for the other moms on their assigned day.

Phase three: A Sister’s Village will own an apartment complex or group of town homes with a community yard, chicken coop and garden to create a form of sustainable living. This will increase the reach of phase two and sustainability aspect as well. Participants will be required to maintain the garden and chickens while also receiving instruction on how to do so.
